Knowing what and where to mine ahead of time can give you a big advantage. Here&#8217;s a quick <em>Valheim<\/em> mining guide to help you get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mining Copper and Tin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first major ores you\u2019ll need are <strong>copper<\/strong> and <strong>tin<\/strong>. After defeating <strong>Eikthyr<\/strong>, the game&#8217;s first boss, you\u2019ll be rewarded with <strong>Hard Antlers<\/strong>, which you can use to craft your first pickaxe: the <strong>Antler Pickaxe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Copper<\/strong> is found in the <strong>Black Forest biome<\/strong>, embedded in large mossy boulders with greenish veins. These deposits yield both copper ore and occasionally stone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tin<\/strong> is also located in the Black Forest, typically near rivers and along the shoreline. Tin deposits are smaller and appear as shiny, silver-black rocks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you collect both ores, you\u2019ll need to build a <strong>smelter<\/strong> to create <strong>copper<\/strong> and <strong>tin bars<\/strong>, then combine them in a <strong>forge<\/strong> to craft <strong>bronze<\/strong> bars. Bronze unlocks many key tools and weapons early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mining Iron<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, you\u2019ll want to pursue <strong>iron<\/strong>, which becomes available after defeating <strong>The Elder<\/strong>, the second boss. This unlocks access to <strong>Swamp Crypts<\/strong>, which require a <strong>Swamp Key<\/strong> (dropped by The Elder) to enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Iron comes from <strong>Scrap Iron<\/strong>, found inside <strong>Sunken Crypts<\/strong> in the <strong>Swamp biome<\/strong>. Look for <strong>Muddy Scrap Piles<\/strong> in the crypt walls and floors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scrap Iron can also appear in chests inside crypts or occasionally in muddy piles outside crypts (though this is rarer).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Scrap Iron is smelted in a <strong>smelter<\/strong> to produce <strong>iron bars<\/strong>, allowing you to craft iron gear and weapons. Both the <strong>Antler Pickaxe<\/strong> and <strong>Bronze Pickaxe<\/strong> can mine scrap iron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mining Silver<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Silver<\/strong> is found in the <strong>Mountain biome<\/strong>, and becomes accessible after defeating <strong>Bonemass<\/strong>, who drops the <strong>Wishbone<\/strong>\u2014a tool that detects buried silver veins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most silver is found <strong>underground<\/strong> and is only detectable with the <strong>Wishbone<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Occasionally, small silver deposits may appear above ground, but they are rare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need at least an <strong>Iron Pickaxe<\/strong> to mine silver. Once smelted, <strong>silver bars<\/strong> can be used to craft powerful gear like the <strong>Wolf Armor set<\/strong> and <strong>Frostner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mining Obsidian<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Also located in the <strong>Mountain biome<\/strong>, <strong>obsidian<\/strong> appears in small black rock formations <strong>above ground<\/strong>, usually on steep slopes or near mountain peaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Obsidian is used to craft arrows and certain upgraded items.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll need an <strong>Iron Pickaxe<\/strong> or better to mine it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Obsidian cannot be smelted; it is used directly in recipes at the workbench or forge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Black Metal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Black Metal<\/strong> isn\u2019t mined\u2014it\u2019s obtained by defeating <strong>Fuling enemies<\/strong>, which are found in the <strong>Plains biome<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Black Metal Scraps<\/strong> drop from Fulings and are used to craft end-game weapons and shields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After defeating <strong>Yagluth<\/strong>, Fulings may also appear in other biomes like the <strong>Meadows<\/strong> and <strong>Black Forest<\/strong>, adding risk and loot to early-game zones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To smelt <strong>Black Metal Scraps<\/strong>, you\u2019ll need to build a <strong>Blast Furnace<\/strong>, which is unlocked after defeating <strong>Moder<\/strong>, the fourth boss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mining Flametal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flametal Ore<\/strong> is currently found only in the <strong>Ashlands biome<\/strong>, which is a volcanic, high-difficulty area located at the southern edge of the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Flametal ore comes from <strong>Glowing Metal Piles<\/strong>, which resemble red-hot volcanic rocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An <strong>Iron Pickaxe<\/strong> or better is required to mine Flametal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Smelt Flametal ore in the <strong>Blast Furnace<\/strong> to produce <strong>Flametal Bars<\/strong>, used in crafting end-game weapons (note: crafting options may expand as the Ashlands update rolls out in full).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>This guide offers a roadmap for mining progression in <em>Valheim<\/em>, giving you an overview of what ores to target, where to find them, and what tools you\u2019ll need.
